Is a Mr. Rooter Plumbing Inspection Free Without Booking Repairs?

Rooter Experts publishes this guide as an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Mr. Rooter.

Three numbered tips: Before Booking a Plumbing Inspection
Confirm the inspection scope and any charges before booking.

If you want a plumbing inspection but are not ready to approve repairs, confirm the visit charge before booking. Mr. Rooter’s published wording ties a free in-home inspection to a repair or another plumbing service. It does not establish that an inspection-only visit is free.

What does the free-inspection wording say?

Mr. Rooter’s residential drain-cleaning page, retrieved October 12, 2026, states that an in-home inspection is “completely free with repair or any other type of plumbing service.” The important word is “with”: the offer describes an inspection paired with service, not clearly a standalone appointment.

The same page says all Mr. Rooter franchises are locally owned and operated and may offer fewer or more services than those listed. Confirm the inspection scope and booking terms with the local Mr. Rooter office serving your address.

That wording does not prove an inspection-only visit has a charge, either. It leaves that question unanswered. Ask the office to state what you would owe if you receive the inspection and decline all recommended work.

Does it include a sewer camera inspection?

Do not assume that a free in-home inspection includes a camera inspection of your sewer line.

The drain-cleaning page separately says a service professional may recommend a video inspection when needed to see inside the pipe. It does not say that camera work is included in every in-home inspection or in the free-inspection offer.

Before booking, ask whether the appointment covers an inspection of the affected fixtures, a camera inspection inside a drain or sewer pipe, or both. If camera work is proposed, ask which line will be inspected and whether it has a separate price. For more detailed scope questions, see our sewer camera inspection quote guidance.

Four questions to ask before the visit

Request written answers from the local Mr. Rooter office so you can review the terms without having to remember a phone conversation:

  • What is the total charge for an inspection-only visit, including any visit or diagnostic fee?
  • Exactly what will the inspection cover?
  • Must I purchase a repair or another service for the inspection to be free, and which services qualify?
  • What would I owe if I decline the recommended work?

If the office says a charge will be credited toward service, ask which service qualifies and whether any conditions apply. Treat that as a term to confirm, not an automatic part of the published offer.

Compare the work, not just the word “free”

Mr. Rooter’s drain-cleaning page says it provides flat-rate pricing before drain-cleaning work begins. That statement concerns the recommended work; it does not settle the separate question of what an inspection-only appointment costs.

When comparing written proposals, keep the inspection, camera work, drain cleaning and repair charges separate. Ask each provider to show the total for the work you are considering, along with what you would owe if you stop after the inspection. A conditional free inspection and a separately priced inspection cannot be compared fairly until their scope and purchase conditions are clear.

Two paper proposals show separate rows with inspection, sewer-camera, and repair symbols.
Hypothetical proposals: compare inspection, camera work and repairs as separate items, including what you owe if you decline further work.
